COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A practical survey of counseling approaches and techniques designed to provide skills in the academic counseling of fellow students. Major emphasis is on examining assumptions about helping, building basic observational and communication skills, facilitating and examining various helping techniques.

Prerequisite: ENG 101. In addition: sophomore standing or above, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, and an interview with the section instructor; or permission of the section instructor.

  • Participants will have an opportunity to learn and practice these skills in a variety of role-playing situations, lectures, experiential exercises, group discussion, and contact with resource persons.
